Lot Essay

Michael Mark, Antique Indian Chess Sets, published Forderkrei Schach- Geschichstsforschung e..v, 1997, page 36.
Mark states that these sets are "often referred to as 'Burmese', while sets to a similar design but with heads above the central ball of ivory are often referred to as being from Macao. However both variants are from Canton, for the European market and probably from the same workshops as straight forward Chinese sets".
