COMPARATIVE LITERATURE:
Colleen Schafroth, Sculptures in Miniature, 1990 Maryhill Museum of Art. A similar set is illustrated on page 51.
The generic term "barley-corn" is derived from the distinctive husk relief carving. Prior to the Napoleonic war utilitarian sets from Dieppe were imported, subsequent trade embargoes throughout the 19th century encouraged the British to become self sufficient and make their own chess sets.
