The Black Forest region had an established tradition of fine carving, in particular the towns of Michelstatt, Erbach and Odenwald. In Keats' view some of the most splendid ivory carved chess sets were produced in these workshops from the late 19th century, carved in African ivory, one side stained black or sometimes brown. The Medieval style subject matter is also similar to the carved softwood figures, such as those depicting the king as Charlemagne, the knights typically modelled as rearing horses and the rooks as conical castles, produced in the Bavaria region during the 19th century.
