COMPARATIVE LITERATURE:
Christie's South Kensington, 1st October 1997, lot 704.
The royal pieces and bishop represent characters from Goethe's Reynard the Fox, written in 1793. Illustrations were made by R. Rhan and A. Schleich executed between 1841-4 for Wilhelm von Kaulbach's text of that time. The king represents Noble the lion, the queen, consort of Noble and the bishops Reynard.
