COMPARATIVE LITERATURE:
Hans and Siegfried Wichmann Chess, Crown Publishers, Inc. New York, 1960, fig.193b.
Josef Hartwig designed this set in 1924 at the Bauhaus school, where he was an instructor. The Bauhaus was formed in 1919 by Walter Gropius, who was appointed director of the arts and crafts school in Weimar, and pioneered a new approach to the problems of industrial design, uniting an understanding of the material, its functional purpose and aesthetic form to produce an end product.
