Lot Essay

In summer 1938, on the way home from Bolton, Trevelyan made a detour via the Potteries. The sketchbooks he produced relating to the visit show the effect the landscape had on him; page after page of pen and ink drawings of a startling intensity. Indeed the visit was to prove a turning point for the artist and paved the way for his move to expressive realism.
