This painting is one of six numbered paintings with the same title. (one is in the collection of the Tate Gallery; two are in the collection of the Corporation of London and one is in the collection of the Southampton Art Gallery).

Malcolm Yorke comments, 'His nudes may not have progressed but he was having breakthroughs with his landscapes and a series of large still lifes composed round the clay figure he had made of Christiane when he could have her in no other way. These explore very daring, often upright compositions, for example Still Life with Clay Figure III of 1938 and have less agitated brushwork than the figures. He had obviously been looking at Cézanne again' (Matthew Smith His Life and Reputation, London, 1997, p. 161).
