Lot Essay

The title for the oil painting, Monster Field, 1939 (Durban Art Gallery, Causey no. 956) derives from Nash's name for a field on Carswalls Farm near Newent, Gloucestershire. Nash also produced two watercolours (Causey nos. 974 and 975) from a set of photographs that he took and these were included in an exhibition at C.E.M.A. in 1943 (see A. Causey, Paul Nash, Oxford, 1980, p. 444).
