Lot Essay

Sutherland's purchase of the house at Menton in 1955 led to a preoccupation with Mediterranean motifs such as vine pergolas, palm palisades, insects and animals. He also picked up 'found objects' which, in his paintings, started sometimes to take on a more imaginative, metamorphic character. In the present work the cones seem to balance and hang, poised against the richly coloured orange and green background.
