Lot Essay

Sutherland made his first visit to the South of France in 1947 and from then on spent part of each year there, buying his own house at Menton in 1955. He started to paint pictures of 'standing forms' in 1949 as a result of an interest in found objects, these had a figurative sense and also gave a feeling of being placed in an environment.
