Lot Essay

The present work is one of many produced by Seago whilst he was travelling with Bertram Mills's circus. The young artist had visited the circus in Norwich and was entranced by the excitement and romance of the circus ring. He followed the circus as their 'artist-in-residence' and travelled with the Baker brothers, a riding act. His experiences at this time led to the publication of Circus Company in 1933, with an introduction by John Masefield, Poet Laureate.
