Discussing the development of the theme of walking couples during the 1980s, Edward Lucie-Smith comments on the present work, 'Here the shapes are a good deal more naturalistic, the transition from thigh to lower leg is less abrupt, the uninhibited swirling rhythm of the cloak brings the sculpture closer to the work of the 1970s. In sculptural terms, the bulk of the garment makes the male partner unnecessary (see E. Lucie-Smith, Chadwick, Stroud, 1997, p. 120, pl. 92, another cast illustrated).
