VERY FINE AND RARE COPY OF THE FIRST DUTCH EDITION of one of the classics on the history of the United Provinces of the Netherlands, by the famous philosopher Jean le Clerc. As humanist and exponent of the Enlightenment, Le Clerc provides an historical account of the Dutch Republic from the beginning of the Revolt against Spain in 1560. The engraved portraits depict important historical figures of the time: William of Orange, King Philip II of Spain, Queen Elisabeth, Cromwell and others, whole the double-page etchings and engravings depict historical events such as the Siege of Alkmaar, Leyden and Antwerp, the assassination of Willem I, his monument in Delft; a large folding view shows the Great Reception Hall of the States General, later to become the House of Parliament.
