Schellinkx and G. de Lairesse, 3 titles printed in red and black with engraved vignettes by Picart, 2 folding maps, 57 engraved portraits by Picart and A. Vaillant, of which four accompanied by poems by Gerard Brandt (1626-1685), 50 double-page engraved plates by C. Decker, J. Mulder, Jan Luyken and Picart, folding engraved plate by Daniel Marot. (Some browning not affecting plates, occasional light spotting.) Contemporary mottled calf, spine gilt with morocco lettering pieces, gilt board edges, mottled edges. VERY FINE AND RARE COPY OF THE FIRST DUTCH EDITION of one of the classics on the history of the United Provinces of the Netherlands, by the famous philosopher Jean le Clerc. As humanist and exponent of the Enlightenment, Le Clerc provides an historical account of the Dutch Republic from the beginning of the Revolt against Spain in 1560. The engraved portraits depict important historical figures of the time: William of Orange, King Philip II of Spain, Queen Elisabeth, Cromwell and others, whole the double-page etchings and engravings depict historical events such as the Siege of Alkmaar, Leyden and Antwerp, the assassination of Willem I, his monument in Delft; a large folding view shows the Great Reception Hall of the States General, later to become the House of Parliament.
