VERY FINE COPIES OF THE FIRST EDITION of the Architectura Naturalis and a revised and enlarged edition of the Halintro-Pyrobolia. The Architettura Universalis treats of military architecture and fortification and illustrates barracks and other buildings, such as prisons and special torture chambers. The work also provides a full description of firearms and pieces of artillery, bombs and fireworks. Furtenbach was a talented Ulm architect and, after studying architecture and engineering in Italy, he returned to Ulm where he designed buildings and gardens while pursuing other business activities. The Ulm fortifications he constructed were amongst the strongest of their time, remaining impregnable during the Thirty Years' War.
