Hand-coloured engraved title with military accoutrements, 6pp. of engraved text, including half-page map of France and hand-coloured medallion enclosing cavalryman on horseback, 166 hand-coloured engraved plates, some highlighted in silver and gold. (Very occasional light marginal dampstaining, touching edges of a few plates only, occasional very light stains or spots, minor marginal tear to one plate.) Mid-19th-century red morocco-backed papered boards, spine gilt in compartments (upper corners lightly bumped, a few light scuffs to extremities). Provenance: Antiguedades Moctezuma, Arroyo (bookseller's label).

FIRST EDITION OF THIS 'SUITE TRèS RARE' (Colas), with fine hand-coloured costume plates of infantry and cavalry troops and of Dragons and Hussards under the reign of Louis XVI. The accompanying text comprises a history and explanation of the 'Origine des Grands et premiers Officiers Militaires Comandans des Armées Françoises'. An enlarged edition was issued the following year, following the Ordonnance of 1779. Colas 2938.
