2° (350 x 245mm). 21 hand-coloured aquatint plates by T. Sutherland and others after Hakewill. (Title and final leaf lightly browned, some light marginal spotting.) Contemporary pink boards (rebacked in cloth, covers soiled, free endpapers torn).

FIRST EDITION OF THIS CELEBRATED SERIES OF JAMAICAN VIEWS, originally issued in 7 parts, 1824-25. Having published his Picturesque Tour of Italy in 1820, Hakewill visited Jamaica in 1820-21, making the thriving colony the subject of this 'charming colour plate book.' Although best known for his views, Hakewill was also a trained architect who became a competitor for the erection of the new houses of parliament in 1836.
