A SUJI BACHI KABUTO [HELMET]
Edo Period (18th/19th century)
A black lacquered suji bachi [ridged bowl], extensively mounted with gilded copper, areas at the front back and sides covered by gilded plates engraved with clouds in the style called shiho-jiro, which in turn have shinodare [spatulate plates] over them, each edged with fukurin [half round edging] as is the mabisashi [peak], the tehen kanamono [decorative mount for the hole at the top] of five stage chrysanthemum design extending well over the top of the bowl, a deep six lame itamono jikoro [neck guard] black lacquered and laced with blue sugake odoshi [spaced lacing], mabisashi and fukigaeshi covered in printed leather
