A RARE LARGE ENAMELLED CANDLESTICK
CIRCA 1740
Modelled after a European silver original, standing on a triangular conical base raised on three scallop legs, the knopped stem surmounted by a triangular section the upper stem supporting a drip pan and ribbed socket, enamelled in blue, iron-red, green and gold with various border patterns including spearhead, some restoration

Lot Essay

This form is in the style of silver late baroque altar candlesticks of circa 1700-20, or possibly slightly later, which were used in Catholic churches in France, Belgium, Italy, Spain or Portugal. Chinese porcelain candlesticks of this large size and of this form are extremely rare.
