FIRST SEPARATE EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY MASKELYNE on the inner front wrapper: "From the Author," with one small ink correction on p.19. Maskelyne's address was read at the Royal Society on 22 February 1787. It was published in Philosophical Transactions, vol. 77, part I, for the year 1787, pp.334-344.
Astronomer Royal Maskelyne was present at John Harrison's famous demonstration of his chromometrical invention in 1767, and Maskelyne wrote up the results and published them in The Principles of Mr. Harrison's Time-Keeper. Adams and Waters, English Maritime Books Printed Before 1801, p.406.
