BORGET, Auguste (1808-1877). Fragments d'un voyage autour du monde. Moulins: P.A. Desrosiers, Imprimeur Editeur, [ca. 1840].
Oblong 4o (232 x 304 mm). Lithographed title and 12 tinted lithographed plates (some occasional pale spotting), all but plate ten with facing text leaf. (One text leaf lacking.) Original decorated glazed-paper boards (spine and covers rubbed); quarter calf chemise; quarter calf slipcase.
A VERY RARE SERIES OF VIEWS. At age 21, Borget went to Paris where he became a close friend of Honore Balzac. In 1836, he began an around-the-world voyage. After spending time in South America, Borget arrived in Hong Kong/Macao in August 1838, first having traveled along the Kwangtung and Fuken coast. He went to Canton in September 1838 and stayed in the region for 10 months. Contemporary records show that he met George Chinnery, the great English artist, who commented on his talent. They went on sketching trips together.
In July 1839 he visited Manila, and in August 1839 he sailed for India via Singapore and the Straits of Malacca, arriving in Calcutta. In 1840 he traveled widely in India, returning to Paris in the summer of 1840.
The subjects of the plates are: 1. Windmills on the Hudson, facing New York; 2. Notre Dame de gloire, Rio de Janiero; 3. A Buenos Aires street scene; 4. A Ravine in the Sierra de Cordova; 5. A Lima street scene; 6. Chilean camp in the Santiago Plains; 7. A watering-place in Aréquipa, Peru; 8. Street vendors in Canton, China; 9. The beach at Honolulu; 10. Boats on the Côte de Bolivie; 11. Bridge in the village of Passig, Philippenes; and 12. A Calcutta street scene. Not in Brunet, Graesse. RARE.
