COREAL, François (ca 1648-1708). Voyages de François Coreal aux des occidentales... traduite e l'Espagnol, avec une relation de la Guiane de Walter Raleigh & le Voyage de Narborough à la Mer du Sud par the Detroit de Magellan &c traduite de l'anglois. Amsterdam: F. Frederic Bernard, 1722.
3 volumes, 12o (158 x 92 mm). Titles printed in red and black. 18 engraved maps and plates (of 20, see note below), 14 folding. Contemporary mottled calf, smooth spines gilt, edges gilt (a bit rubbed and worn).
FIRST EDITION. Coreal's book was published under four separate imprints in 1722, two in Amsterdam and two in Paris. Borba de Moraes notes that all the 1722 printings are identical, and the printing was likely shared by the various booksellers named on the title-pages. "The fact that no Spanish edition of these voyages is known, has led to the belief that no such person as Coreal ever lived. In speaking of the work, Mr. Rich says: 'There appears to be no reason to doubt of the identity of Francis Coreal, or of the fact of his having visited the different countries he describes... His relation occupies only one half of the work, the other half being made up of a selection from other authors... [which suggests] that the work consisted of fragments taken from several effective voyages by some starving compiler'" (Sabin). There is some confusion as to plate count: Borba de Moraes calls for 15 plates and maps in 2 volumes; Palau and Sabin call for 20 plates a maps in 3 volumes.
