Anghiera, known as Peter Martyr, was the first writer to emphasis the importance of the discovery of America by his countryman Columbus. He was a member of the Council for the Indies at the Court of Chalres V in Madrid, where he was able to obtained first-hand information from Columbus, Cortis, Carbot, Vespucci, Magellan, Vasco de Gama, and other explorers and conquerors.
