Qrs., 2nd brigade, Paducah, Ky. 4 December 1861. 2 pp., 4to. Wallace, the future author of Ben Hur, lauds the new company commander, Thomas Moore, of H Company, 23rd Indiana. "The condition of the company under Abbott, or 'Old Bill,' as he was accustomed to call himself, was deplorable. The tents of the men had never been swept or cleaned: fifty odd of them went down sick: there were no accounts of the company--literally nothing...Moore has started a thorough reformation and is very industrious." -- WOOD, Thomas J. Outraged over newspaper accounts that his troops were drunk during "the late raid," McCook answers: "I most solemnly assure you that this is an infamous falsehood. I do not believe there was a drop of liquor in the command at the time. Some was captured at Fayetteville and destroyed by my order, and this was two days before we had any fighting....The living can vindicate themselves, and I desire the friends of those who fell on that bloody field to know that they sleep in their honored graves without a stain upon their memories. They fell like soldiers, and went to the presence of their God, sober and in their right minds." Together 3 items. (3)
