Lincoln writes: "General Totten, please see Mr. Rena Oct. 23 1862."
The official to whom Lincoln addresses his note, Brigadier General Joseph Gilbert Totten (1788-1864), was a distinguished engineer and the first professor of mathematics at West Point. At this date, the elderly Totten was Chief Engineer of the Army, supervisor of the Washington D.C. defenses and ex officio superintendant of the U.S. Militay Academy, in which capacity Lincoln frequently was in frequent contact. Mr. Rena has not been identified. Not in Basler or supplements and presumably unpublished.
