FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY GILPIN TO SEN. WILLIAM A. BUCKINGHAM on the front wrapper. Gilpin gave this address at the British Association of Science, Liverpool, 26 September 1870. Gilpin was the first territorial governor of Colorado, and a colorful adventurer who accompanied Frémont in 1843. Sen. Buckingham was noted for his work on Indian affairs, which would have appealed to Gilpin, who had been engaged in Indian fighting during the Mexican War in 1847-48. Graff 1557 (2nd ed.); Howes G194.
