Lot Essay

Johann Joachim Kändler (1706-1775) was Modellmeister at the Meissen factory from 1733 until his death. In connection with J.F. Eberlein and P. Reinicke he worked on several series of figures well as on his own famous series of Commedia dell'Arte harlequin figures. He modelled many different animals including the celebrated life-size ones for the Japanische Palais in Dresden. The present rollers are recorded as having been modelled by Kändler in 1735, and various examples exist with rococo bases, some stamped with the C couronné poinçon, which was employed between March 1745 and February 1749. A closely related pair was sold from the Garbisch collection, Sotheby's, New York, 17 May 1980, lot 197 ($ 33,000).
