Lot Essay

François Bayer, maître in 1764.

With its delicate marquetry of musical instruments, this elegant table demonstrates Bayer's talent as a marqueteur and his oeuvre includes several similarly-decorated items of furniture executed in the Transition style of the late 1760's and 1770's. Interestingly, Kjellberg explains that after circa 1780, Bayer restricted himself to restoration work (P. Kjellberg, Le Mobilier Français du XVIIIe Siècle, Paris, 2002, p. 48).
