UNDERGLAZE-BLUE KANGXI SIX-CHARACTER MARK WITHIN A DOUBLE CIRCLE AND OF THE PERIOD (1662-1722)
With shallow rounded sides rising from a short foot to a flaring rim, incised in the centre of the interior with a five-clawed writhing dragon chasing a flaming pearl, below two striding dragons around the well, the exterior with two striding dragons above a band of lotus petals, covered overall in a vibrant, deep aubergine glaze stopping above the unglazed foot rim and the white-glazed base

Compare with two identical Kangxi-marked dishes, the first illustrated in Chinese Porcelain, The S.C. Ko Tianminlou Collection, Hong Kong, 1987, part I, pl. 144; and the other from the Koger Collection, illustrated by J. Ayers, Chinese Ceramics - the Koger Collection, 1985, p. 172, pl. 144. It has been suggested that this vibrant purple glaze was an innovation of the late Kangxi period, and the Koger dish was 'part of an imperial dragon service, continuing a style instituted under the Ming', op. cit., 1985, p. 172.

A similar dish was sold in our Hong Kong Rooms, 27 October 2003, lot 632, and another, also from the E. T. Hall Collection, was sold at Sotheby's Hong Kong, 2 May 2000, lot 523.
