KANGXI (1662-1722)
On a flat base with a central circular recess, covered on the exterior with a russet-coloured glaze mottled with dark grey and copper-coloured metallic speckles, the glaze thinning to brown towards the rim and stopping in a neat circle around the recessed base, the interior glazed white
7 5/16 in. (18.6 cm.) diam.

Lot Essay

The glaze is of the 'saturated-iron' type and related to red enamels. In this case, a high-fired leadless composition was used as its base and reduced rather than oxidised. The rust colour would develop as ferric oxide re-oxidized and crystallized on the cooling surface
