CRESCI, Giovanni Francesco (1534-1614). Il Perfetto Scrittore, Parte Prima [-- Parte Seconda]. [?Rome: ?F. Aureri for the author, c.1570]. Two parts in one, oblong 4° (185 x 250mm). Without 12 lvs. of an alphabet 'maiuscole cancellaresche' usually found at end of Part II but perhaps printed later, and the privilege leaf dated 1571. See below for contents. (Title-page stained and repaired with slight loss, tears in 3 lvs. with some loss and amateur repairs, some staining, a few marginal repairs.) Early ms. pagination and supplied colophon on L4v. Old vellum (recased). Possibly unrecorded edition. Although a ms. colophon at the end of pt.I identifies the present copy as the Rome 1570 edition, it varies from Barker. Notably, "Parte Prima" appears on the first title-page; Part I consists of a title, **4 (dedications), A-L4; and there is no printed colophon (here supplied on L4v in early manuscript); Part II has a title, ***4 (***4 blank) and 24 leaves containing 2 alphabets. It also appears to vary from the Venice edition and therefore represents a third, as yet undescribed, edition; Johnson (p.40) cites a copy at Milan which also appears to be neither the Rome 1570 nor Venice edition. Cf. Johnson p.38-40, Bonacini 426, 427, and Morison p.103-106. Sold not subject to return.
