RICHARDSON, John. The Eglinton Tournament, London: Colnaghi & Puckle, 1843. 2° (620 x 444mm). Hand-coloured lithographed title, dedication leaf and 21 plates by Day & Haghe after James Henry Nixon. (Dedication leaf stained, some fraying.) Disbound in original morocco-backed silk-covered boards (lightly stained and spotted). Provenance: "donné au Duc du Padova par la Prince Napoleon-Louis Bonaparte, au château de Ham, en 1842" (inscription on front free endpaper). Sold as a Collection of Plates, not subject to return.
Abbey Life 388: "An account of the famous tournament at Eglinton Castle, in August 1839, given by the thirteenth Earl of Eglinton, and presided over by Lady Seymour as the Queen of Beauty. This entertainment is said to have cost 40,000 and to have made the Earl the most popular nobleman in Scotland."
