EVELYN, John (1620-1706). Autograph letter signed ('Evelyn') to Ralph Thoresby, Dover Street, 27 June 1702, ½ page, folio, integral address panel (to Thoresby 'at his house in Leedes'), annotated below the text presumably in the hand of the recipient, small red wax seal (duststained in folds on verso).
A somewhat apologetic explanation for having failed to reply earlier to a letter, and about arrangements for getting two coins to his correspondent. 'I have left the two piece of Coins you describe (if indeed after my wife and my Examination, the[y] proved to be the same I mention) with Mr Hunt, operator of the Society at Gresh[am] Colledge, to be delivered to whomsoever comes in your name for them'. Referring to Thoresby's collection, Evelyn asks him to accept 'that small Token which my wife presents you'. Thoresby's notes on the letter identify two pieces, 'Lord Fairfax enameld upon Gold' and 'a Crown [and?] obsidional pieces'.
