SEWARD, Anna (1747-1809). Autograph letter signed to 'Mr Cadel' [Thomas Cadell, her publisher], Lichfield, 16 October [17]87, 1½ pages, 4to, including a draft reply written at the foot of the 2nd page, seal cut, tipped into a folder.
Referring to an apparently pirated edition of her 'Ode to Eliott', and asking for reassurance that there has been no second edition, 'These are the frauds by w[hic]h Authors are robbed of their profit & their fame'.
Anna Seward's grandfather had taught the young Dr Johnson, and she supplied Boswell with details of his early life. Her circle included Erasmus Darwin, and her works were edited by Walter Scott in 1810. Her verses on General [George Augustus] Eliott's return from Gibraltar celebrate his gallant resistance of the three-year Spanish siege.
