"Cicero Dias symbolizes the most successful marriage of Regionalism and Modernism. His form of expression was modern. His subject matter were the things he was familiar with from his region. Whoever looks at these inaugural paintings of 1928 will agree that there actually is a regional statement within a surrealist language, so to say. And within it all, the anarchic presence of the Brazilian spirit that in that same year (1928) would give birth to the Anthropophagic movement which he joined."
