Durante su estancia en Nueva York, 1936-1948 "abundan en su obra las escenas impregnadas de cotideaneidad, o con motivos de la vida rural indígena o mestiza de México. Un estilo primitivista incrementa en ellas aún más la presencia del arte popular, alterando las proporciones naturales utilizando colores contrastantes."
