HUMPHREY BOGART HANDWRITTEN LETTER

A one page letter composed in black fountain pen ink by Bogart. Written on 'Hotel Algonquin' stationery, the note reads in full "Dear Mrs. Spencer,/Thanks so much for your/sweet letter./Maudie passed away very/suddenly and absolutely without any/suffering - it was best that she went/when she did as she might have suffered/terribly./I was able to make the/last years of her life very happy/and comfortable./When you come to the theatre/please come back stage./Best regards/Humphrey;" 'Maudie' being Bogart's mother, Maud Humphrey Bogart, who was a successful commercial illustrator from the 1890s to the 1920s. Included is the original transmittal envelope with a postmark reading "New York, N.Y. Dec 9, 1940/1 P.M."
