Portrait of Mr Morley, half-length, in a red coat

The present portrait would appear to correspond with sittings made by a 'Mr. Morley' and his wife 'Mrs Morley' in 1787 for two portraits for which Romney recorded payment of 50 guineas. Their address was given as No. 2 Soho Square (see Ward and Roberts op.cit.). By this stage in his career Romney had established himself, alongside Gainsborough and Reynolds, as one of the most fashionable portrait painters in London.
