Lot Essay

This view was inspired by the countryside around Pencerrig, Wales, the artist's native landscape. The sky is particularly thinly and dexterously painted, while the water of the stream is applied with a heavier impasto. Although the work is indistinctly dated, it seems likely that it was painted around 1775.
