Lot Essay

The present picture is a fine and characteristic example of Herring's early work. Henry Marwood Greaves (1793-1859) was born at Page Hall. He was educated at Cambridge and became a Deputy Lieutenant for Derbyshire and a Justice of the Peace for Derbyshire and the West Riding of Yorkshire. A Captain of the Tickhill troop in the 1st West York Yeomanry Calvalry, he was also a celebrated sportsman.
