The striped black enamel case with central carved ruby, sapphire and enamel bowl of fruit with diamond detail to the rose-cut diamond ends, opening to reveal three compartments and a mirror, a stork engraved on inside of case, late 1920s, 7.1 cm. long, with French assay mark for gold, in black suede Cartier pouch
Signed Cartier, no. 1004
Provenance
André Dubonnet (1897-1980)
The wealthy aviator and racing driver André Dubonnet from the eponymous aperitif firm was an owner of several Hispano-Suiza cars including his H6C Tulipwood Torpedo that was specially built for him in 1924. The now famous stork motif of Hispano Spiza emanates from First World War and top-scoring French aviator Georges Guynemer. He flew with the Escadrille Cigogne (Stork Squadron) which had the flying stork image painted on the side of their aircraft, powered by Hispano Suiza V-8 engines. After the war when the firm reverted to manufacturing cars the stork became the mascot on the top of the radiator.
