The Wolfers archives record that this inkwell, designed on the 2nd May 1929 with the design name "Annibal", was one of a small series of simlar vessels produced in April/May 1929. It is estimated that no more than five of each model in the series were produced, and very few are still known today.
Philippe Wolfers (1858 - 1929) is best known as one of Belgium's foremost silversmiths and designers of Art Nouveau jewelry and objets de vertu. However, he was also active in the 1920s, designing the modernist 'Gioconda' service in silver and ivory which was featured by Wolfers Frères at the Paris 1925 exhibition, and the 'Boma' service in 1929.
His son Marcel (1886-1976) was apprenticed in his father's workshops in the early 1900s, and later became artistic director of the firm.
