Lot Essay

The infamous 'Judge Jeffreys' was appointed Lord Chief Justice in 1683. His reputation was founded on the ruthless manner in which he conducted the 'Bloody Assize' in the West Country after Monmouth's rebellion (1685). Having passed over 200 death sentences and some 800 transportations he became know as 'The Hanging Judge'.
