Lot Essay

KK: That was purchased from [George] Gruhn?

EC: ...From a visit to the store ...while on Tour in the late '90s.. They had this little room where only high rollers were allowed to go...with only 8 or 9 guitars in there...Apart from the OM [not included in the auction]...that was..the highest price I've paid for a guitar [between $50 and $70 thousand dollars].

CW: Would you have used this one for any writing?

EC: No..it's purely a collectors buy...It stood in the corner of the room...I had it up here in this house [in Chelsea, London]...I'd pick it up and play it... It has a lovely delicate, light sound, because it's small bodied, beautiful sound but very hard on the left hand.

KK: ..really elegant - slot head.

EC: Beautiful ..yes..A Joan Baez guitar isn't it?

The OO-45 body is larger in length and width than the O-45 [see Lot 8]. In 1929 a mere 10 were produced by the craftsmen at Martin. The sale price in 1929 for this guitar was $160.
