Bellissimo insieme di quattordici lettere autografe firmate di Ernest Aldrich Simpson alla moglie Wallis (che lo sposò in seconde nozze, dopo il divorzio dall'asso dell'aviazione "Win" Spencer, nel 1929), dal 1929 al 1956. Molto dolci le lettere del '29 alla sua Poor darling, nel pieno di un tenero innamoramento; divertente quella September 8th, 1935, su carta intestata GLADSTONE , NEW YORK (Darling: have you ever before received a letter from the clouds? I am at present sailing through space on my way to N'Orleans). Ma la successiva è addirittura drammatica (October 14th, 1936): I think something made me quietly died when I closed the door of the flat for the last time this evening. I have no tears left to shed (senza firma né formule di saluto). Ma già nella successiva December 19th, 1936 Mr Simpson torna a preoccuparsi dello stato di quella che per poco ancora sarà la sua consorte: Wallis dear: I did not have the heart to write before. I have felt somewhat stunned and slightly sick over recent events. I am not, however, going into that, but I want to believe. I do believe - that you did everything in your power to prevent the final catastrophe. E la catastrophe puntualmente si consuma: pochi mesi dopo Wallis andava in sposa (il 3 giugno 1937, nel castello di Candé in Francia) al suo Edoardo. L'agente di commercio americano, dall'animo - lo si è visto - così romantico, non manca tuttavia di fair play: e nelle lettere successive resterà su toni affettuosi e comprensivi, sempre apprensivi per la pressione alla quale la Duchessa può essere sottoposta dalla stampa di tutto il mondo, affamata di scoop (così, per esempio, nella lettera May 31st, 1937: Hope you have not had too bad a time recently with all these blasted Press Hounds).
