1966 FORD THUNDERBIRD CONVERTIBLE
Registration No. OPE 21D
Chassis No. 6Y85Z130959
Silver with white and grey leatherette interior
Engine: V8, 390ci., c.300bhp at 5,000rpm; Gearbox: 3 speed automatic; Suspension: independent front with coil springs, rear longitudinal arm with springs; Brakes: four wheel drum. Left hand drive.
When Thunderbird designer Frank Hershey set out to design a sports car with 'banker appeal', he unknowingly created a legendary automobile that was so popular in its first year, it outsold the Chevrolet Corvette four to one. When Hershey left Ford for General Motors in 1960, the Thunderbird had sold over 90,000 units in the same year. The car had not only survived, but become an overwhelming success in the eyes of the American public. In order to maintain the dignified image of a 'banker's car', the Thunderbird was stripped of much of its chrome. The Thunderbird continues to be a success to this day and thus their legacy ensures a faithful following.
Purchased by the current owner after an advert was spotted in the LA Times in 1994, it was imported into the United Kingdom from California immediately. Resplendent in silver livery, this cruising colossus really looks the part. Currently displaying a mere 39,012 miles on the clock it has been the subject of an older restoration and whilst presenting well it could certainly benefit from some tidying if one was to wish to visually enhance it. Blending well, the interior is trimmed in white and grey leatherette and although worn and lightly marked in places it is in keeping with the rest of the car. This T'bird has been regularly maintained (albeit seldom used) and a large history file with an abundance of invoices accompany the car including the current MOT which expires in July this year.
