After the Second World War, Rolls-Royce and Bentley production was established at Crewe, instigating a marked change in philosophy: to build complete motor cars rather than only a chassis to be clad by established coachbuilders. A massive cruciform chassis was designed with independent front suspension and a 4¼ litre engine of new design. Known as the B60, it featured overhead inlet valves and side exhaust valves, all push-rod operated. A novel item was the variable ride control via the rear shock absorbers, controlled by the driver from a steering wheel quadrant. Bodywork produced by Pressed Steel Ltd. was factory fitted on these chassis, known as the Bentley MK VI and the Rolls-Royce Silver Dawn. Only a few chassis went to coachbuilders for individual treatment.

At the same time, it was necessary that Rolls-Royce have a model supplied in chassis form only, for bodywork built by the coachbuilder. As the Silver Wraith was the last model supplied in chassis-only form, it is often considered by many traditionalists to be "the last real Rolls-Royce." Based on this chassis, the remaining coachbuilders were thus still able to cater to the market for large and luxuriously equipped motorcars, many still chauffeur-driven. The firms of H.J. Mulliner, Hooper, Park Ward and Freestone and Webb bodied some 1,700 cars during the model's twelve year production run (between 1947 and 1959).

Hooper and Co., one of England's oldest coachbuilders, built many bodies on the Silver Wraith chassis, and this is an example of their Touring Limousine coachwork, to design number 8034A. The car was sold new from Bath Garages Ltd. of West Bath to S.H Barnes of Heywood House Westbury, Wiltshire, but little is known of its later history.

Acquired for the collection in the late 1980s, the Rolls-Royce has been completely reupholstered in recent times in red leather, but is otherwise ostensibly original and shows some age. Interior fitments include foot rests and picnic tables for the rear passengers as well as a cocktail cabinet.

Mechanically, Christie's has not had the opportunity to road test the car, but it started promptly when inspected and it was noted that the engine bay was tidily presented.
