Lot Essay

Dieppe was the centre of the ivory trade in 17th century Europe.

A similar example from a private collection described as c. 1690-1700 is illustated in Howard Ricketts, Objects of Vertu, page 58.

Three similar rasps sold by descent from the collection of Emile-Louis Evrard were sold at Christie's London, 7 July 1998, lots 60 and 61 for £1,725 and £920 respectively.

See also Ancienne Collection Delbee-Jansen Christie's Monaco 10-11 December 1999, lot 525 for two similar examples which sold for 23,000 French Francs.
