Lot Essay

The firm of Nicholls and Plincke was established in 1829 when an Englishman called Charles Nicolls joined a workship which was already established as early as 1815. Until the 1880's, when it began to be replaced by Fabergé, Nicholls and Plincke had one of the most important shops of it's kind in St. Petersburg which not only had the patronage and the Warrant of the Imperial court but also was much in favour with St. Petersburg society. For more information on this maker see Alexander von Solodkoff, Russian Gold and Silver, page 200.
