Lot Essay

The authenticity of this work has been confirmed by Monique Le Pelley Fonteny.

Initially, Léon-Augustin Lhermitte executed this composition in 1902 under the title Le Goûter des Moissonneurs, measuring 90 x 108 cm. The present work is a smaller version of the 1902 composition.

Respecting the rustic life that was his upbringing and inspiration, he executed a prodigious number of works on the themes of rural life, its characters and landscapes. This work was executed in 1917 and the artist chose to portray peasant workers resting, eating and drinking after concentrated bouts of labour. Practising the literal transcription of his experiences en plein air, he worked among the labourers themselves, men and women, in the fields.
