A Victorian silver four-piece tea and coffee-service
Mark of Charles Stuart Harris, London, 1875
Comprising teapot, coffee-pot, sugar-bowl, and cream-jug, each slightly bombé on four cast figural feet formed as a man holding a shell, each body elaborately repoussé and chased with a frieze of tavern scenes in the Teniers style, chased and applied with figures drinking, smoking, sleeping, playing cards or musical instruments in wooded and village landscapes, the teapot and coffee-pot with foliage-wrapped textured branch handle with ivory insulators and eagle's mask spout with grotesque mask below, and with domed covers chased with a village and with detachable cast finial of a drunken man, the sugar-bowl and cream-jug with cast handles formed as reaching figures seated on tree-trunks, marked on bases and covers
